Decoding the Common Chemicals in Vape Juice

As you sift through the hundreds of vape juices for sale, you are faced with long ingredient lists and abbreviations that may not make any sense to you. Fortunately, most e-liquids are made of the same basic components, and once you understand what they are you can read any ingredient list easily.

Propylene Glycol (PG)

This is one of those ingredients that comes with a big intimidating scientific name. However, Propylene Glycol has been widely used in a variety of medical treatments, foods and other products for decades. Repeated studies have shown that it is safe for use and for inhalation, which is why it is used in breathing treatments to carry the actual medicine being administered. It is odorless and mostly flavorless. When heated, it produces the large plumes of vapor that we know and love.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

Vegetable glycerin is the plant-based alternative to propylene glycol. It is also an odorless and mostly flavorless base material that carries the flavors and nicotine in your e-juice. It is slightly sweeter and more viscous than PG, and is typically mixed with PG to create balanced e-liquids.

Flavors

Each e-juice is typically made up of several different flavors blended together to give it its signature taste. These are the same flavorings that are used in many of our most popular foods, including fruit and dessert flavors. Most flavors are suspended in a tiny amount of PG before they are added to your e-liquid so even e-liquids that are “Max VG” will still have a tiny amount of PG in them.

Nicotine

One of the most important ingredients on the list will be nicotine. In this case, it is pure nicotine extracted from tobacco plants that is being used. This is different from actual tobacco because it is a cleaner derivative and can be vaporized without any of the other harmful side effects of smoking tobacco leaves. The amount of nicotine in your e-liquid will be left up to you to decide when you place your order.

These are the main components of any e-liquid. The biggest difference between brands will be where they source their flavors and nicotine from, because you want these ingredients to be pure and safe. You will also find that most e-liquids include a small amount of water in the mix, which is obviously safe for inhalation.

KandyPens MIVA Review

With pro-marijuana legislation gaining steam across the U.S., more people are looking for portable and discreet ways to enjoy their herbs while out and about. The KandyPens MIVA portable marijuana vaporizer is a perfect option for anyone who wants a high-quality device that won’t draw too much attention. The sleek device comes in four shiny colors, including black and white, and features a simple control panel for easy vaping.

Out of the Box

Straight out of the box, your KandyPens MIVA dry herb vaporizer is ready to use. The short, narrow mouthpiece comes pre-installed so you can literally load it up and start vaping right away. However, you’ll find the kit also includes a longer glass mouthpiece. This is an important distinction to make, because the longer glass piece changes the vapor temperature before it reaches your mouth and clears up the flavor so you are getting a really pure taste of whatever you put in your device.

Getting Familiar

Once you’re ready to use your weed vaporizer, it’s time to pack the oven. The heating chamber is made of high-quality ceramic, which also contributes to a clean vape. The oven is not very large, but this makes it easier to clean and minimizes your waste because your herb is heated evenly without leaving any leaf unturned.

The kit comes with everything you need to gently pack the chamber and to clean it when you’re done. Start out with a tiny bit of product and slowly add more until you get to a comfortable point. If you over-pack it in the beginning you will constrict the airflow and greatly reduce the efficiency of your device.

In addition, this is a temperature-controlled device. The front panel features a simple screen, + and – buttons and a single power button. While it is capable of anywhere from 300-435 degrees, a good middle point between 350-375 is a great place to start until you are comfortable with the device. The built-in 2200 mAh battery is strong enough to sustain your vaping at this level for quite a long time.

Overall, the KandyPens MIVA is a great little device for discreet marijuana vaping. The long mouthpiece definitely makes it one of the best-performing devices in this market, and the advanced features give it a competitive edge.

BFDFT by Cloud Chasers Inc.

One thing I hate is having to constantly refill my tank. The BFDFT by Cloud Chasers is a big tank that can hold a lot of e-liquid. After doing some research, many owners said it could hold roughly 15 mil of juice which is exactly the scope of storage capacity I was looking for. With that in mind I decided to give it a try.

Build Quality

The BFDFT is a well made device. The first thing I noticed was how thick the glass was – at 2 mil it isn’t going to break anytime soon and speaks to a solid build philosophy. It also has a lot of versatility for modding because of how it’s made.

Aside from plenty of room for liquid it also had plenty of room for changing parts. With no posts, I found it really easy to modify it to fit my personal taste. It can hold coils as big as 4 mil and wires that are up to 3 mil thick. I’m sure more creative people can come up with a more unique set up than I use, but that’s one of the reasons I like the BFDFT – the possibilities.

Using the BFDFT

When using the BFDFT I noticed the following pros and one con:

Pros

  • It can hold a lot! I could easily pour an entire bottle of juice into it no problems.
  • It produces big clouds. If you’re into that sort of thing it can certainly accommodate.
  • It can take plenty of voltage with no trouble.

Cons

  • If I have to list a con there is a notable one. The BFDFT can leak easily if you don’t set it up just right. The leak is clearly noticeable right above the airflow and is a bit concerning. After some testing I found this was not a design flaw but user error on my part. I just had to use more cotton and it stopped.

Final Score

In summation, this tank offers unique possibilities. I like it because aside from its big storage capacity it has plenty of room to mod and try out new ideas and concepts. Also, once I used it for awhile I figured out its unique quirks. Overall it does what I wanted which is store a lot of liquid with the bonus of build flexibility. Overall I give it 4 out of 5 because it takes a while to learn it.

DripStar Vape Juice Review

One of the things I love about vaping is the variety of flavors available. There’s always some new flavor to try out if I’m feeling adventurous or just want to taste something different.

Vaping is a growing hobby and that means there’s a lot of different juices out there to try. After reading a few reviews, I decided to try some e-liquids from DripStar. At the very least their marketing is interesting but are they any good?

Here’s my opinion on the three flavors I tried: Buddha Spit, Bad Hare Day and Politically Correct.

Buddha Spit

Advertised as a blend of cream and fruit flavors. The flavor (fittingly enough) is really mellow and relaxing, and in no way harsh or strong. The fruit blend taste is a nice blend of orange and mango flavors topped off with a creamy vanilla taste as you exhale.

I like sweets and fruit flavors so I loved this. I will say the fruit flavor is kind of mild but it fits the theme of the flavor. If you’re looking for a vape with a lot of ‘punch’ this isn’t it. Overall, I rate it it a 5 out of 5.

Bad Hare Day

The packaging described this flavor as a vanilla custard. After vaping I can say they weren’t lying. There is a definite blend of strong smooth vanilla flavor.

The aftertaste is very creamy and reminds me of expensive coffee drinks. If you like strong vanilla flavors, I recommend it and score it 4 out of 5.

Politically Correct

Switching from cigarettes, I miss the cool taste of menthol flavors. Luckily this flavor was here to help. It’s a blending of the taste of menthol with a sweet watermelon flavor.

Being Southern, I know a good watermelon when I taste it ,and this flavor was pretty exact and blended well with the menthol. Neither flavor was too strong or overpowering and they blended well. Very refreshing. I score it 4.5 out of 5.

Conclusion

After giving DripStar a chance I have to say their products are pretty good. The flavors I tried I liked a good deal. They were all worth the money and I’d consider buying from them in the future. If I have to pick a favorite based on personal taste, Buddha Spit wins, but all are certainly good juices.

Dripped Life E-Liquid Review

Dripped Life is a fun new line of e-liquids designed to bring out the very best flavors for lifelong drippers. They started off with a bang, introducing a wide range of flavor options from pastries and desserts, to fruity delights. Early reviews are in and vapers everywhere love this new treat.

Pastries

Dripped Life started strong with their D’Lish e-liquid, a cakey donut flavor filled with a fresh berry jam. It’s a great way to start your day with its lightly sweetened flavor profile and plenty of pastry as the base. The other popular pastry flavor in their lineup is an apple pie mash up called Carnival. Spiced apples wrapped lovingly in caramel and balanced stoutly atop a flaky pastry crust.

Fruits

If you’re searching for a creative new fruit blend, try Dripped Life’s all new Twist. In fact, it’s such a well crafted fruit punch blend, you can’t quite pick out all the different flavors mixed in; you simply have to try it for yourself. Mistress is their other strong fruit contender, offering more of a fruit and cream blend that is a little sweeter. It’s a great evening vape when you’re winding down.

Everything Else

Dripped Life is still flexing their wings and learning to fly. So far they have managed to work some really strong fruit flavors into virtually all of their vapes. Widow Maker is just a little different. Sure, it has a soft blackberry base, but it is the mint and citrus blend that captures your heart. Menthol vapers will love this interesting combination that really came out of nowhere. The Last Stand is Dripped Life’s customary custard flavor, smooth and creamy as can be.

It’s still early in Dripped Life’s run, but they have already impressed with their range and delivery. All of their e-liquids thus far appear to be high VG blends, and they are getting plenty of attention from experienced vapers who are looking for somebody to shake things up. We can expect to see plenty more from these guys as they branch out into more wholesome flavors over time. So far everything they have developed has lived up to expectations and provided a refreshing twist to old flavor profiles.

Chemicals to Avoid in E-Liquids

E-cigarettes and the liquids used in them are extremely popular. While most e-liquid manufacturers provide a list of their products’ ingredients to the FDA, many others do not.

This means that some e-liquids can still contain harmful chemicals that can eventually damage your lungs. A few of the most common chemicals are well known and widely used in the food industry. Others are used in a variety of industrial products.

Nicotine

Nicotine is a well known ingredient in cigarettes. E-cigs were actually developed to help people stop smoking and reduce their dependence on nicotine gradually.

Most e-liquids are custom-made, this means the nicotine is added when the liquid is being mixed. While commercially manufactured e-liquids have specific amounts of nicotine, custom-made e-liquids can contain unusually high levels of nicotine that may be dangerous. It’s best to be careful and purchase your vape juice from a trusted U.S.-based company, rather than from overseas.

Flavorings

Many of the chemicals found in e-liquids are included to enhance or improve the flavor. Two of the most common chemical flavorings used are Diacetyl and Acetyl Propionyl.

Both have a flavor similar to that of butter and can be found in many foods, including caramel and popcorn flavorings. They also react in much the same way once inside the lungs. They can damage and, with excessive use, destroy the tiny airways inside the lungs. Prolonged use of these kinds of chemicals can lead to what is known as “popcorn lung”.

One thing to remember when looking at ingredients, is that just because the FDA says something is safe to consume as a food, it doesn’t mean it is safe to be inhaled into the lungs.

Miscellaneous Chemicals

Studies have proven that e-liquids contain a variety of chemicals. Many are harmless, but a few have the potential to be dangerous if ingested in large amounts. A few of the most common chemicals found in e-liquids include the following:

  • Benzene – Often found in gasoline and pesticides, it is considered to be a carcinogen, no matter what route. It may cause damage to the red blood cells and has been proven to cause reproductive side effects in women.
  • Diethylene Glycol – Commonly found in anti-freeze, it is known to cause intense eye irritation and may be the cause of fetal abnormalities in pregnant women.
  • Isoprene – Isoprene is a primary component in rubber and products made from rubber materials. Studies have shown that it is possibly carcinogenic, depending on the level of exposure.
  • Phenol – Also referred to as carbolic acid, phenol as used as a disinfectant and antiseptic cleanser. It can cause irritation to the eyes, mucus membranes and lining of the throat.
  • Proponal – An alcohol isomer that is used as an industrial solvent.

Before you purchase an e-liquid, request a copy of the ingredients contained its formula. Identifying potentially harmful chemicals is important if you want to reduce your risk of exposure and protect your health.

The 5 Best VG Juices, Ranked

Vaping has finally reached the tipping point! From the earliest e-cig “vape” devices (made by the tobacco companies) to today’s high-tech APVs (Advanced Personal Vaporizers – or “Vape Pens”), vaping has come a long way.

What Makes E-Liquid Juice Good?

As a general rule, all e-liquids are created around a base of vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, or a combination of the two. Let’s look at each a little closer:

Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

This is a thicker heavy sweet-tasting liquid. It gives smokeless cigarettes a pleasant sweet flavor and creates a lot of vapor. It’s also very smooth in the throat. VG is completely natural and safe, derived from vegetables; most manufacturers use organic, non-GMO veggies.

Propylene Glycol (PG)

This is very thin by comparison and sweeter than VG. PG produces a great throat hit, which is why some ex-smokers favor PG based liquids. PG is also used in Asthma inhalers, so it is safe, however PG has a higher rate of sensitivity and can cause allergic reactions in some users.

Blends of VG and PG offer experienced vapers the best of both worlds, giving you the throat hit and sweetness of PG and the vapor production of vegetable glycerin juices. Different ratios produce different experiences. Experiment and find your bliss!

The Best VG Juices Ranked 1 thru 5

Basic VG juices are usually made from four substances: water, flavoring, nicotine and vegetable glycerin. They deliver a nice balanced sweetness, are easy on the throat and produce plenty of vapors. Here are five of the best manufacturers out there:

Their juices are made with USP grade vegetable glycerin and food grade flavors.

Halo produces some of the best e-liquids available. They have 25 blends to choose from and each comes with a “freshness” best-by date, traceable numbering and childproof caps. Their high VG range is perfects for RDAs and sub-ohm tanks.

#3 NicQuid

This company offers high quality products including blends that features high-vegetable glycerin flavors that are thicker versions of their classic Bliss Dessert and Blast Fruit lines. Nicotine levels of 0, 3 and 6% are available.

#4 Black Note E-Juice

If you are an ex-smoker and looking for the flavor and comfort of tobacco or menthol blends, look no further than Black Note. Their juices are produced from naturally extracted tobacco leaves and never include any synthetic flavors, colors, dyes or additives.
